CORE checks: what Benchmarq tests for technical health

The CORE track is the foundation under the other three: it checks that crawlers can fetch your pages, that the responses and headers are sensible and that pages and documents can be parsed. If CORE fails, the other tracks cannot help.

Synopsis
Track
CORE: Technical health. Scored from 0 to 100.
Question it answers
Can crawlers fetch and parse your site without problems?
Check groups
3 groups of checks in the report, summarised here in 3 categories.
Detail
Every individual check, with its result and fix, is in your report in the app. This page shows what each category covers.
In the product
The audit engine runs these checks, and the report shows the result of each one.

What do the CORE checks cover?

Each category is a group of related checks. Examples show the kind of thing that is tested, not a complete list.

Can crawlers fetch your pages?

Reachable URLs, sensible status codes and correct rules decide whether a bot can read a page at all.

Examples of what is tested

  • robots rules and sitemap
  • Status codes and redirects
  • Canonical URL and Link header
  • How the site handles missing pages

How to improve

Fix broken links and redirect chains, return a proper 404 for missing pages and declare canonical URLs.

Do your firewall and rate limits let legitimate bots through?

Protection that is too strict blocks the crawlers you want. Headers tell a bot how fast it may go.

Examples of what is tested

  • Web application firewall behaviour
  • Rate-limit headers
  • Response headers that crawlers read

How to improve

Allow the crawlers you want in your firewall, and send rate-limit headers so bots know how to behave.

Can machines parse your pages and documents?

Valid markup and clean documents parse faster and more reliably.

Examples of what is tested

  • Valid HTML and structured data syntax
  • Print and text stylesheets that render the page as a document

How to improve

Validate your markup, and add a print stylesheet so the page renders cleanly as a document.

How do you run the CORE checks?

Scan a page or a whole site. Every scan runs the four core tracks, and the report lists each failed check with its fix.

In Benchmarq

Start a scan and open the CORE section of the report to see each check, its result and the fix.

Questions.

Straight answers about the CORE checks.

Where is the full list of CORE checks?

In the report in the app. Each check has its result, severity and fix. The public pages describe what each category covers.

How is the CORE score calculated?

From weighted checks. Every deduction ties to one check and one fix, and the four track scores combine into the overall score. How the score is built.

Will fixing a check improve my rankings or citations?

It makes your site easier to find, read and quote. Benchmarq measures readiness and does not promise rankings, citations or traffic.
